Dasam Granth which means ‘Book of the tenth’ is a holy book written by Guru Gobind Singh Ji himself. With his pen filled with the ink of god’s love, Guru Gobind Singh Ji wrote various compositions in the book. Compositions like, ‘Jaap Sahib, Akal Ustat, Bachitar Natak, Chandi Charitar I & II, Chandi Di Var, Gian Prabodh, Chaubis Avtar, Brahm Avtar, Rudar Avtar, Shabad Hazare, 33 Sawaiyye, Khalsa Mehma, Zafarnama’ and more.
But today many of the Guru’s Sikhs itself do not believe that Dasam’s Composition is also ‘Bani’. There are many reasons behind this but there is one which is above all.
‘Education’. Yes, education is the main cause, not the education that we get from schools and colleges but the one that we get from the wrong sources. People who do not believe influence others in not believing. Human Beings are hungry for answers and some people know that. They try to sell knowledge whether the knowledge is right or wrong. And people who want to know the answers fall into the hands of these knowledge traders. My personal request to every sikh is that they should try to get knowledge from the very source from where our Gurus got it, Sahib Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. It is the only reliable and most trusted source for knowledge that is not limited to only this world but the entire creation.
‘Guru Gobind Singh Ji did not include his bani in Guru Granth Sahib Ji’. This is another reason of some people not believing in Dasam Granth. For people who believe in Guru should know that there is always a very strong reason behind anything that the Guru does. There are so many reasons behind Guru Gobind Singh Ji not including his writings in Guru Granth Sahib Ji but the most important is that the Guru is complete. Guru Granth Sahib Ji got complete with the writings of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. If it wasn’t complete, we wouldn’t call it “Pura Satguru”. Another reason is that the theme of Dasam Granth is entirely different. Guru Granth Sahib Ji reflects upon God’s love and the truths of life while Dasam Granth was written for making up the confidence in the Sikhs for fighting. Even the laziest and the most coward person would jump into the battlefield after reading Dasam Granth even once.
‘Guru Gobind Singh Ji did not compile his compositions in a book’. This may be true but there is again no proof about that. The present record of Dasam granth was written by Bhai Mani Singh Ji with his own hands. But the writings are still of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. People sometimes take this as a reason for not believing. Guru Granth Sahib Ji was also written by many of Guru’s Sikhs under the watchful eye of the Guru, so has Bhai Mani Singh Ji. He gathered Guruji’s writings from various places and compiled them in a book. He did not include anything of his own. Those who have any idea of Guruji’s writing style would know who wrote the compositions in Dasam Granth.
‘Guru Gobind Singh Ji had a team of poets with him’. This is yet another reason for some people not believingin Dasam Granth. Although Guru Gobind Singh Ji had a team of poets in his court, their writings are not at all included in Dasam Granth or its name wouldn’t be Dasam Granth. Bhai Mani Singh Ji made sure that the compositions belonged to Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He was not just any man, he was a contemporary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji and a learned scholar. He knew Guru Gobind Sigh Ji personally and knew his style of writing. Bhai Maini Singh Ji is one of the Sikhs whose writings are universally trusted along with Bhai Gurdas Singh Ji.
‘Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the Guru and not Dasam Granth’. Yes, Guru Granth Sahib is the guru and there is no doubt about that, but people have stopped reading Jaap Sahib and Tav Parsad Savaiyye in their Nitnem. Now that is something wrong. Even if the Dasam Granth was not Guru’s composition, Guru Gobind Singh Ji had ordered his Sikhs to recite those five Banis. It is the Guru’s order that counts first and no one can deny that Guru Gobind Singh Ji had not given his Sikhs instructions about what bani they should recite in their daily prayers. It is not something new that the Panj Pyare are giving orders to recite Five Banis during amrit vela.
Whatever the reasons may be, we should not forget that Guru Gobind Singh Ji has his reasons for not including his writings in Guru Granth Sahib Ji and Sikhs should not question the work of Guru. It is the virtue of the educated to reason and so Education is the most important reason for not treating Dasam Granth as Bani. I cannot say that everybody should read Dasam Granth but atleast everybody should read and recite Guruji’s Banis in Nitnem. Whereas, Dasam Granth was and will always be credited to Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
These are some of the reasons that I know. If I come to know more or if anybody else knows something more or if somebody thinks I am wrong somewhere than please leave your message either on forums or use the contact page to e-mail me directly. Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki fateh.
